  • TOPA4LA Town Hall

    • Los Angeles County is majority renters with most of them being low-income Black and Brown residents. Many of them are living in rental buildings that are aging or owned by mom and pop landlords who are aging out of the profession. These units, some of the last naturally occurring affordable housing (NOAH) left in the county, have been gradually disappearing. Bought by corporate landlords and investors in search of striking it rich in real estate, these units are being redeveloped into market rate housing and their tenants are being displaced.

The Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) is a proposed policy that will give tenants in unincorporated Los Angeles County the opportunity to purchase their rental building if and when the building goes up for sale. For low-income tenants of color all over LA County, TOPA represents a new opportunity to matriculate out of tenancy and into home ownership that is permanently affordable and collectively maintained for generations to come.

  • Preserving Our Homes & Democracy with Community Land Trusts - Virtual Election Teach-In

    • Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are community-led organizations known mostly for preserving and strengthening permanently affordable housing. But what does that have to do with democracy?

    • Maybe it’s the way that CLTs and residents organize together to buy back the block. Maybe it’s the way CLTs enable residents to build their own co-ops and assume ownership of their home. Maybe it’s the way every single CLT is required to have a Board of Directors consisting of its residents and the surrounding neighborhoods.

    • It seems like democracy is built into the DNA of CLTs.

    • During this and every election season, we are told our voices matter and that our vote is our power. But democracy does not end on Election Day, and power can only be built with work over time. Democracy is a daily action that only gets better with practice. Join us for this virtual teach-in and learn how CLTs not only help us preserve our homes and community but also preserve and strengthen democracy.
